National audienceThis article aims at explaining national differences in ethnic prejudice at a Western European scale (EU15). The analysis of international surveys first allows to build up a comparative measurement of prejudiced attitudes. We then build upon Threat Theories, that sustain most international comparisons of prejudiced attitudes. We thus show that the contextual phenomena, which are said to induce threat feelings – in particular immigration – do not account for national differences in ethnic prejudice. At the same time, explanations referring to “political cultures” or to “cultural openness” (of which social capital is a key component) are neither sufficient.
